What is an agentic client portal?
Updated 5 min read
Most client portals are places. A client logs in, leaves a request, downloads a file, and leaves. Everything that happens between those moments, the clarifying questions, the reminders, the nudges for sign-off, the status updates, is still done by a person on your team.
An agentic client portal takes on that in-between work. The word agentic means it acts on its own toward a goal, rather than waiting to be asked. The goal here is simple: keep every client's work moving without someone chasing it by hand.
How it differs from other client portals
| Who does the follow-up | What the client does | What the AI does | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email and shared folders | Your team, from memory | Writes emails, hunts for files | Nothing |
| Client portal | Your team, from the portal | Logs in to request, download and approve | Nothing |
| Portal with AI features | Your team, with a writing assistant | Same as above | Drafts text or answers questions when asked |
| Agentic client portal | The portal, with your team in the loop | Asks in the portal, by email or through their AI agent, approves in one click | Briefs, asks, follows up, collects sign-off and reports |
What an agentic client portal does
Briefing
A client writes "can you fix the homepage thing". An agentic portal turns that into a brief your team can start from: what they want, the facts it already knows, and what's still missing.
Asking for what's missing
Instead of a team member writing back for the page, the deadline or the logo file, the portal asks the client directly, and only for the parts that are actually missing.
Following up
When a client goes quiet on feedback or an approval, the portal nudges them, then tells the team if the nudges don't work. Nobody keeps a list of who owes what.
Getting sign-off
Finished work goes to the client with a one-click approve or request-changes step. Some portals can approve automatically after a set time if nobody replies, so done work doesn't sit open for weeks.
Reporting
Clients get a regular summary of what was delivered and what's waiting on them, written from the actual work rather than assembled by an account manager on Friday afternoon.
Routing
New requests go to the right person: the account lead, or whoever has the lightest week, with the reasoning shown. The team can accept the suggestion or let the portal assign directly.
The guardrails that matter
A portal that talks to your clients has to be one you can trust. These are the controls to look for.
- Every action is visible. Messages the portal sends to clients sit in the same request thread your team reads.
- The team sets the rules: tone of voice, when to follow up, whether approvals can happen automatically, and what needs a human.
- It works inside the portal's permissions. Clients only see their own work, and internal notes stay internal.
- Access to connected tools is limited. Reading a meeting transcript to answer a question is different from changing data in another system.
- It hands off. When a request needs judgment, the portal passes it to a person with the context attached, instead of guessing.
How to tell if a portal is agentic
Plenty of portals now have AI. Five questions separate a portal that does the work from one that helps you do it.
- Does it act without being asked? A chat box you have to open is an assistant, not an agent.
- Does it talk to clients directly, or only to your team?
- Does it follow up on its own when a client goes quiet?
- Can you see and steer everything it does, in the same place your team works?
- Is it part of the price, or a metered add-on you'll ration?
Examples
DoraDora is built as an agentic client portal. Its AI account manager, also called Dora, briefs each request, asks clients for what's missing, follows up with quiet clients, collects one-click approvals with optional auto-approve, routes requests to the right person and sends weekly summaries. Its work shows in each request thread, and it's included on every plan.
MoxoMoxo describes AI agents that work across multi-step client processes, including an AI concierge in the client portal. It's aimed at larger firms running fixed, structured workflows, and it's sold through demos.
FuseBaseFuseBase adds AI agents to client portals and workspaces, with limits on what each agent can access. Its focus is documents and knowledge bases more than the flow of client requests.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between an agentic client portal and an AI client portal?
An AI client portal has AI features; an agentic client portal does work on its own. A writing assistant or an app builder helps your team when someone asks. An agentic portal briefs requests, follows up with clients and collects sign-off without being prompted, inside rules you set.
Does an agentic client portal replace account managers?
No. It takes over the repetitive part of account management: chasing details, reminding, collecting approvals and writing updates. Account managers keep the relationship, the judgment calls and the strategy, with more of their week free for them.
Is it safe to let a portal talk to my clients?
It is when every message is visible and the rules are yours. Look for a portal that shows its messages in the request thread, lets you set tone and follow-up rules, keeps each client's data separate, and hands off to a person when a request needs judgment.
Who is an agentic client portal for?
Teams that handle an ongoing flow of client requests: agencies, studios, productized services, consultants and in-house teams with internal clients. The more time your team spends chasing replies and decoding requests, the more an agentic portal gives back.
What does an agentic client portal cost?
It depends on how AI is priced. Some tools meter AI in credits or sell it as an add-on. Dora includes its AI account manager on every plan: free for your first client, then $10 per client a month with unlimited team seats.
Which client portals are agentic?
As of 2026, few portals do the full set of jobs. Dora is built around it. Moxo and FuseBase offer AI agents for parts of the work. Our ranking of the best agentic client portals compares them in detail.
