Overview
HoneyBook is a client management platform for independent service businesses. It covers the cycle of winning and billing a client: lead forms, proposals, contracts, invoices, payments, scheduling and a client portal where clients find their documents.
It has been around since 2013, according to its site, and it names photo and video, events, marketing, professional services and personal services among its audiences. It also says plainly what it isn't for: e-commerce, subscription billing, payroll, inventory, or internal work with no client attached. It's available to business owners in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia.
HoneyBook's other big bet is AI. Every plan includes HoneyBook AI, from email drafts and a meeting notetaker to follow-up suggestions and lead enrichment. The product is built around selling and billing clients, though, rather than managing an ongoing stream of requests and approvals, which is where it differs most from request-based portals.
Key features
Booking to payment in one flow
Proposals, contracts and invoices connect, so a client can review, sign and pay in one sequence. Card fees start at 2.7% plus 10 cents, and ACH is 1.5%. Starter already includes invoices, payments, proposals and contracts. Each client engagement holds the contract, invoice, payment and project together, so documents don't have to be matched to clients by hand.
HoneyBook AI on every plan
Every plan includes HoneyBook AI: chat, an automations builder, email drafts, a meeting notetaker, meeting prep, priority lead notifications, follow-up suggestions, project recaps, business trends, lead enrichment and a Gmail lead finder.
Scheduler, automations and SMS reminders
Starter includes a calendar. The scheduler, automations, SMS reminders and QuickBooks Online start on Essentials at $59 a month, along with removal of the 'Powered by HoneyBook' line.
Lead forms and templates
All professional templates are included from Starter. Live lead forms are capped at 2 on Starter and 10 on Essentials, and unlimited on Premium. Questionnaires and a CRM with a project pipeline, client profiles and tasks come with every plan.
Client portal and branding
Starter includes the client portal. You can apply your brand colors, fonts and logo, and client links use a custom subdomain.
Multiple companies and reports
Premium adds multiple companies under one account, advanced reports and priority support. Starter has basic reports and Essentials standard reports.
Integrations and agent access
HoneyBook connects to QuickBooks Online on Essentials and up, plus Zapier, Calendly, Zoom, Google Calendar, Canva, Mailchimp, Stripe, PayPal and Square. AI agents can connect through MCP or a REST API with OAuth. The homepage also lists Outlook, Gmail, Flodesk, OpenAI and Anthropic among its integrations and says HoneyBook is available inside ChatGPT. HoneyBook notes it syncs with QuickBooks but isn't a general ledger.
What it's like for your clients
For a client booking a service, HoneyBook is smooth: a proposal, a contract to sign and an invoice to pay, all branded and linked together. HoneyBook describes each client engagement as holding the contract, invoice, payment and project together, and the portal gives the client one place to find those documents later. On Essentials and up, SMS reminders help clients remember appointments.
HoneyBook's homepage shows a portal for each project with sections for an overview, activity, tasks, files, payments and notes, alongside messages. Its payment screen shows Apple Pay and Google Pay buttons and optional tips of 15%, 20% or 25%. HoneyBook has iOS and Android apps, though the pages we checked don't say how clients sign in or whether clients use the apps. Client links use a custom subdomain with your branding; a full custom domain isn't stated on the pricing page. Check sign-in, messaging and mobile access during the 30-day trial, which needs no card.
For ongoing work, it's thinner. HoneyBook's AI suggests follow-ups and drafts emails for you, which helps, but the product is built around your inbox and pipeline, not around a client sending requests and approving deliverables. If a client needs to ask for a revision mid-project, that usually happens over email.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Booking to payment in one flow
- 30-day free trial
- Wide AI feature set on every plan
Limitations
- Built for selling and billing more than ongoing request work
- Automations and scheduler only from Essentials ($59/mo)
- Team members capped at 2 below Premium
Pricing
HoneyBook prices per plan, with unlimited clients and projects on all of them. Starter is $36 a month, Essentials $59 and Premium $129 on monthly billing, or $29, $49 and $109 a month billed yearly. Team members are capped: Starter doesn't list any, Essentials allows up to 2, and Premium is unlimited. There's a 30-day trial with no card. When we checked, a promotion lowered Essentials and Premium for the first three months on monthly billing.
A 5-person team with 10 clients needs Premium at $129 a month, because Essentials caps team members at 2. Clients don't change the price. On yearly billing, Premium is $109 a month. Payment processing fees come on top of the plan.
At 3 people, it depends on whether Essentials' 2 team members are in addition to the account owner, which the pricing page doesn't say. If they are, a 3-person team fits Essentials at $59; if not, it's Premium at $129. A 15-person team pays $129 on Premium, the same as five. A solo owner could run 10 clients on Starter at $36, or on Essentials at $59 for automations and the scheduler.
| Plan | Monthly | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $36 | Portal, invoices, contracts |
| Essentials | $59 | Scheduler, automations, 2 team members |
| Premium | $129 | Unlimited team members |
Integrations: QuickBooks Online, Zapier, Calendly, Zoom, Google Calendar, Stripe, PayPal.
Who it's for
A good fit if
- Solo creatives and small service businesses that book and bill clients
- Businesses where proposals, contracts and payments are most of the client work
- Owners who want AI help with email, meeting notes and follow-up suggestions on every plan
- Owners running more than one company, on Premium
- Businesses that want SMS appointment reminders, on Essentials and up
Look elsewhere if
- Agencies managing a steady flow of requests and approvals
- Teams of three or more who don't want to pay for Premium
- Firms that need a full custom domain
- Businesses that sell subscriptions or need e-commerce, which HoneyBook says it isn't designed for
- Teams that want a REST API for invoices and contracts; HoneyBook's API documents contacts, projects, workspaces and pipeline, and points invoicing tasks to MCP
HoneyBook alternatives
Dubsado$35/moDubsado offers deeper forms, workflows and multi-brand support for contract-heavy onboarding. Pick it if you want more control over automation and don't mind a longer setup.AssemblyFree, then $49/moAssembly puts billing, contracts and forms in a portal built for firms with many clients. Pick it if you want a more portal-centered experience with magic-link sign-in.
DoraFree, then $10/client/moDora is built for ongoing client requests, with an AI account manager that briefs them and follows up. Pick it if most of your work happens after the contract is signed.
The verdict
HoneyBook is a strong fit for solo service businesses that run on proposals, contracts and payments. Booking to payment is one connected flow, the 30-day trial is generous, and its AI features, including a meeting notetaker and follow-up suggestions, come on every plan. It's less suited to agencies handling ongoing requests, and the team cap pushes even a small team to $129 a month. Pick it if booking and billing are the center of your business. If you're a small team rather than a solo owner, price Premium from the start.
